Last fall, I completed a co-op term with Turner Drake & Partners as a Real Estate Analyst. Throughout the term, I was introduced to several facets of real estate and quickly realized the experience would be broader than I initially expected. I worked with teams in Property Tax, Valuation, Lasercad®, Planning, and Economic Intelligence. Each division exposed me to a different side of the industry and helped me understand how the firm’s work connects together.
A large portion of my role involved research, data collection, and supporting project work. I helped gather market information, organize property data, update internal databases, and research sales and rental activity. Through this work, I gained a better understanding of how important accurate information is in real estate consulting and how every step contributes to the overall analysis.
I also spent a lot of time learning about Property Tax during the pre-roll period, where I was introduced to assessment review work. At first, it was difficult to understand how all the different pieces and moving parts fit together. However, over time, and with support from the team, I learned how property assessments are reviewed and how detailed analysis can help clients reduce their tax burden. The experience taught me the importance of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
One of the most valuable parts of my co-op placement was having the opportunity to work across multiple divisions. It showed me how interconnected different areas of real estate are and how market data, valuation work, assessment information, and research all support one another. Seeing those connections gave me a broader understanding of the industry as a whole.
Another aspect of the experience that stood out to me was the office environment. Starting a co-op placement can feel intimidating, especially as a student with limited professional experience who is still learning how to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations. At first, adjusting to new systems, terminology, and expectations was challenging, and there were times when I felt unsure of how much I could contribute. However, the team created a supportive environment where asking questions was encouraged and learning was part of the process. Everyone was approachable and willing to explain not just how tasks were done, but why they mattered. That support helped me become more confident and more comfortable working in a professional environment.
That experience is one of the main reasons I wanted to return this summer. My first co-op placement gave me meaningful exposure to the industry while allowing me to contribute to real project work and continue learning from experienced professionals. Since I already have a stronger understanding of the firm’s processes and divisions, I am excited to contribute more confidently while continuing to build my knowledge of real estate consulting.
Returning to Turner Drake & Partners Ltd. felt like a natural next step after my first co-op term. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue growing in a workplace that has already taught me a great deal about both the industry and the kind of professional environment I value.
